Beautiful Soul - Jesse McCartney #musicfriday #90smusic

It's funny how time flies; from once upon a time, don't talk to boys;
To now, 'so who are you seeing'?

It's funny how times have changed; from once upon a time, guys chase after girls
To now, girls chase after guys

It's funny how the loves songs we grew up to know, were about guys begging girls not to leave them; promising not to break hearts; guys pledging loyalty
To now, guys bragging about how they can't date an "ugly girl" (I mean!! What is ugly? *kmt*)......YQ
How they are only gonna break hearts....Taio cruz
Yes I have my sources
Singing about how a girl can hit it big if she has a baby by them.....50cents
Or simply asking what girls want from them! Hian!!
C'mon!! We used to call the shots na!!

Remember; "I don't want no shy guy"...."I don't want no scrub" et al?
Jeez!! Now you hear ladies singing songs like
"Please don't leave me"
"Tryna sleep with a broken heart" etc
The last straw for me was listening to the song about ladies meeting guys halfway!!! -black eyed peas
Adonbulivit!!!!
Whatever happened to the good old love songs
"I'm down on bended knees"
"I'm going crazy"
The list goes on

Anyhoo, enough ranting. Our jam for the day is a beautiful beautiful song about +Jesse McCartney beautiful soul Sombori!! Hehe. Where's he by the way. (Jessie that is)

This song does it for me for more reasons than one. As always, the rhythm on point, and then the lyrics are beautiful. Simple, no lustful innuendos, just him professing love In the plainest, purest and 'beautifulest' way ever!!!

Enjoy!

Tell me again why you still doubt that the best songs ever were produced in the 90's.

"Beautiful Soul"

[Intro:]
I don't want another pretty face
I don't want just anyone to hold
I don't want my love to go to waste
I want you and your beautiful soul

I know that you are something special
To you I'd be always faithful
I want to be what you always needed (This is where I faint!)
Then I hope you'll see the heart in me

[Chorus:]
I don't want another pretty face
I don't want just anyone to hold
I don't want my love to go to waste
I want you and your beautiful soul
You're the one I wanna chase
You're the one I wanna hold
I won't let another minute go to waste
I want you and your beautiful soul
Your beautiful soul, yeah

You might need time to think it over
But I'm just fine moving forward
I'll ease your mind
If you give me the chance
I will never make you cry c`mon let's try

[Chorus:]
I don't want another pretty face
I don't want just anyone to hold
I don't want my love to go to waste
I want you and your beautiful soul
You're the one I wanna chase
You're the one I wanna hold
I won't let another minute go to waste
I want you and your beautiful soul

Am I crazy for wanting you?
Maybe do you think you could want me too?
I don't wanna waste your time
Do you see things the way I do?
I just wanna know that you feel it too
There is nothing left to hide

[Chorus:]
I don't want another pretty face
I don't want just anyone to hold
I don't want my love to go to waste
I want you and your beautiful soul
You're the one I wanna chase
You're the one I wanna hold
I won't let another minute go to waste
I want you and your soul

I don't want another pretty face
I don't want just anyone to hold
I don't want my love to go to waste
I want you and your beautiful soul

Ooooooo
Beautiful soul, yeah

Oooooo, yeah
Your beautiful soul (this phrase! Oh lawd)
Yeah

Everybody's free to wear sunscreen.......Baz Luhrmann #90smusic

Exactly a year ago, I gave a belated shout out to my cousin +jide ogungbesan and shared #90smusic from Maxwell - about a year ago today! This makes me realise how long its been already since I started this blog, interesting how time flies. Happy birthday again today Jide!! Love you loads and thanks for encouraging me from the start.

It's Friday and I am in the mood for some good quality #90smusic, it's been a while. Before I get to the music though, anybody out there as happy as I am about the kids school resumption?! Whew!! That was one mighty long one. Here's one picture I saw that sums it up pretty well, hehe;

You know you feel the same way! Stop using bad eye to look at me joo.

The song I dug up for today was more of a spoken word released in 1998 by Australlian film director, Baz Luhrmann. I don't get that excited by work in this genre (i.e. spoken word), but this one got me! I read somewhere that the song was based on an essay written as a potential commencement speech by Mary Schmich, published in the Chicago Tribune in 1997. Enough with the history class (if you are interested though, go here), but the words of this essay still ring true today and I really do hope as you listen or read, you actually do hear them....

Enjoy.....

Read the actual essay here as published in June 1997.

Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of ’99
If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen (and this is true) would be
it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by
scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable
than my own meandering
experience…I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh never mind; you will not
understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded. (hmmm)
But trust me, in 20 years you’ll look back at photos of yourself and
recall in a way you can’t grasp now how much possibility lay before
you and how fabulous you really looked….You’re not as fat as you
imagine.

Don’t worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as
effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing
bubblegum. (hahaha, really, why worry)
The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that
never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm
on some idle Tuesday.

Do one thing everyday that scares you

Sing

Don’t be reckless with other people’s hearts, don’t put up with
people who are reckless with yours.

Floss

Don’t waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you’re ahead, sometimes
you’re behind (so true)…the race is long, and in the end, it’s only with
yourself. (This should be in capital letters!!)

Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you
succeed in doing this, tell me how. (haha)

Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements. (Er...that's if you got any)

Stretch

Don’t feel guilty if you don’t know what you want to do with your
life…(Oh glory!! Cos, this is me, most of the time and no, I refuse to feel guilty)
the most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they
wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year
olds I know still don’t.

Get plenty of calcium. (I haven't been getting that o)

Be kind to your knees, you’ll miss them when they’re gone.

Maybe you’ll marry, maybe you won’t, maybe you’ll have children, maybe
you won’t, maybe you’ll divorce at 40, maybe you’ll dance the funky
chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary…( the funky chicken dance would be nice, if we can still stand, hehe)
what ever you do, don’t
congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either – your
choices are half chance, so are everybody else’s. Enjoy your body,
use it every way you can…don’t be afraid of it, or what other people
think of it, it’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever
own..

Dance

…even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room. (Yep yep! cos really, nobody should see me dance! I have two left legs)

Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them.

Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly. (aha!)

Get to know your parents, you never know when they’ll be gone for
good. (When last did you call them? yes you!)

Be nice to your siblings; they are the best link to your past and the
people most likely to stick with you in the future.

Understand that friends come and go,but for the precious few you
should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and
lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you
knew when you were young. (Word!)

Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live
in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. (eheen, really?)

Travel.

Accept certain inalienable truths, prices will rise, politicians will
philander, you too will get old, and when you do you’ll fantasize
that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were
noble and children respected their elders. (But its true, this generation ehn, in my day....*rolls eyes*)

Respect your elders.

Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund,
maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one
might run out.

Don’t mess too much with your hair, ( er.. +Lola Maja-Okojevoh, *coughs* just messing with you! Much love) or by the time you're 40, it will
look 85.

Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who
supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of
fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the
ugly parts and recycling it for more than
it’s worth. (read this again...)

But trust me on the sunscreen…

Nothing Compares 2 you - Sinéad O'Connor #90smusic

It's that time of the week again, when we share songs we love from the archives and sometimes not that far back. Before I share the song, I need to whine a bit - "Who sent me to fire lesson teacher oooo" #dazall.

Today's song is bang on 90s! It was originally written and composed by Prince  but was made popular by Irish singer Sinéad O'Connor, a highly controversial singer with strong views about child abuse, sexual abuse and women rights. In an interview with Oprah, she had this to say about why she shaved her head;

"They wanted me to grow my hair really long and wear miniskirts and all that kind of stuff because they reckoned I'd look much prettier," she says. "So I went straight around to the barber and shaved the rest of my hair off."

Just look at that face! She poured all her emotions into the song and video, you can tell
She's shown herself to be one that isn't afraid to stand for what she believes in, even in the face of jeers and criticism. "Nothing Compares To You", is such a deep song (Kudos to Prince's writing skills) and Sinead brought it to life with a video that sends shivers down your spine. In an interview she gave, she said the tears she shed in the last bit of the video were real tears as she remembered her mother.

It's been seven hours and fifteen days
Since u took your love away
I go out every night and sleep all day
Since u took your love away

Since u been gone I can do whatever I want
I can see whomever I choose
I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant
But nothing
I said nothing can take away these blues

`Cause nothing compares
Nothing compares 2 u

It's been so lonely without u here
Like a bird without a song
Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling
Tell me baby where did I go wrong

I could put my arms around every boy I see
But they'd only remind me of you
I went to the doctor and guess what he told me
Guess what he told me
He said, "Girl, you better try to have fun no matter what you do."
But he's a fool
(This part is funny! O tun bu doctor ni sha, Lol. But to be honest, sometimes you are hurting so much that nothing anybody says can make you feel better. At such times, all you want is someone to sit with you and cry with you or just hold you and say nothing)

`Cause nothing compares
Nothing compares 2 u

All the flowers that u planted, mama
In the back yard
All died when u went away
I know that living with u baby was sometimes hard
But I'm willing to give it another try

Nothing compares
Nothing compares 2 u
Nothing compares
Nothing compares 2 u
Nothing compares
Nothing compares 2 u

End of the road ....... Boyz II Men #90smusic

I know it's not Friday and you do too I believe, but still, I'll do my TGIF post today. I have had an extremely busy weekend, plus traffic almost finished me in that Lekki of a place on Friday! Good God!! Even when I was feeling smart by taking the new link bridge from Ikoyi and paying the whooping (yes, it is whooping!) N250 as toll, I was still on the bridge for close to 30 minutes. How so annoying. Mscheew. Anyway, all of my running up and down was not in vain. I have happy customers, that's all that matters.

I did something yesterday that made me float with joy all the way home. Even as I was stuck on the bridge, 3rd mainland one this time, I didn't feel bad at all, tired yes, but very happy. I surprised a client whose cake was messed up during valentine's. She didn't believe it, especially because it's been so long. The look on her face was priceless. I had been planning to do this for a while, since her hubby refused my offer of a refund. I could dish out a million and one reasons to not take the blame - the baker messed up, there was traffic and too much pressure, yada yada, but who cares about my sob story. I was listening to some branding expert over the radio last Sunday and he said, your clients don't pay you for effort, they pay you for results. Sounds harsh, but that's the plain truth. Funny enough, I remember one of my old bosses in the bank used to say that a lot, I found it extremely annoying at the time! Lol! Look at me now.

I have been chasing aunty Tosyn to share her 90smusic choice with my blog readers for some time now (Okay, I exaggerate, a little over a week actually). Madam versatile, mulit-talented OAP is so hard to catch. She is too too busy! I must hand it to her, I honestly do not know how she does it. Please guys, add your voice to mine and let's beg area mama to please, pretty please and pleeeeease, honor our request to grace this blog with her majesty's writing skills. While we wait, I must continue to try not to bore you with my #90smusic playlist. Here goes nothing!

I am sure many of you will agree that we cannot speak of R&B in the 90s without Boyz II men! I mean how?! I remember when my dad bought the "End of the Road" single on cassette, I sat by the radio with my pen and notepad, pressing rewind and fast forward to get the lyrics to the song! Lol!! I am sure if anyone in this generation was asked to do that we would get an "ain't nobody gat time for that" response, hehe. If you were born in my generation though, and you never did any of the following;

- Record songs from Raypower and try to cut of their Raaaaaypower tag line from it
- Sit with the radio player with your pen and paper, rewinding and fast forwarding to note down lyrics
- Buy hip-hop world magazine to learn lyrics so you can shine when you sing along, Lol

then you must have been some dry @*% kid! Sorry.

Back to the matter. End of the road was recorded by boyz II men for the movie boomerang, starring Eddie Murphy. This became the second hit of 1992 to place on the all time top 10 list of pop hits, first was Whitney's "I will always love you"! These people could sing and wake the dead! The 90's rocked abeg!

I just watched the video again and almost choked with laughter at the clothes meeen! To think we all thought they looked cool. Fashion is so fickle. What on earth was going on with those over sized suits and the jeans! OMG. I'll still do the lumber jacks though, any day. Enough already, Let me share the video.

Enjoy...

[Spoken:]
Girl you know we belong together
I have no time for you to be playing
With my heart like this
You'll be mine forever baby, you just see

[Verse:]
We belong together
And you that I'm right
Why do you play with my heart,
Why do you play with my mind?

Said we'd be forever
Said it'd never die
How could you love me and leave me
And never say goodbye?

When I can't sleep at night without holding you tight
Girl, each time I try I just break down and cry
Pain in my head oh I'd rather be dead
Spinnin' around and around

[Chorus:]
Although we've come to the End Of The Road
Still I can't let you go
It's unnatural, you belong to me, I belong to you
Come to the End of the Road
Still I can't let you go
It's unnatural, you belong to me, I belong to you

Girl, I know you really love me,
You just don't realize
You've never been there before
It's only your first time

Maybe I'll forgive you, hmm
Maybe you'll try
We should be happy together
Forever, you and I

Will you love me again like you loved me before
This time I want you to love me much more
This time instead just come to my bed
And baby just don't let me down

[Chorus:]
Although we've come to the End Of The Road
Still I can't let go
It's unnatural, you belong to me, I belong to you
Come to the End of the Road
Still I can't let go
It's unnatural, you belong to me, I belong to you

[Spoken:] (Aaaah!! This guys spoken part was to die for, heo!, *Faints*)

Girl I'm here for you
All those times at night when you just hurt me
And just run out with that other fella
Baby I knew about it, I just didn't care
You just don't understand how much I love you do you?
I'm here for you
I'm not out to go out and cheat on you all night
Just like you did baby but that's all right
Hey, I love you anyway
And I'm still gonna be here for you 'till my dying day baby
Right now, I'm just in so much pain baby
'Cause you just won't come back to me
Will you? Just come back to me

(These are the kind'a lyrics that have beclouded the thinking of many girls today! lol. Wahala)

(Lonely)
Yes baby my heart is lonely
(Lonely)
My heart hurts baby
(Lonely)
Yes I feel pain too
Baby please

This time instead just come to my bed
And baby just don't let me down

[Chorus:]
Although we've come to the End Of The Road
Still I can't let go
It's unnatural, you belong to me, I belong to you
Come to the End of the Road
Still I can't let go
It's unnatural, you belong to me, I belong to you

[Chorus: a cappella]
Although we've come to the End Of The Road
Still I can't let go
It's unnatural, you belong to me, I belong to you
Come to the End of the Road
Still I can't let go
It's unnatural, you belong to me, I belong to you

Just look at them! Lol! No comments.

A cooler them, except for that drewrag (that's what it was called yeah?) Jeez!

By the way, if you are in Africa or the middle east, be alert so you don't miss the partial solar eclipse. I have read that it's one to look out for. Not like Solar eclipses happen everyday, but this they say is going to be a rare one.

This woman's work.......Maxwell #90smusic

Before I start, I have to give a shout out to my cousin Jide Ogungbesan. Coz, I was meant to do a post on your birthday precisely and give this shout out, but sleep overcame the desire to do that. Love you lang time coz!! Mwaah.

It's  been three days again. We started this aerobics sessions where I live and it's not a joke. I am not that fat, so I assumed I was fit. Alas! I thought wrong. After the first session, I was in pain for a whole week. I was so sure I was coming down with malaria, till I remembered the origin of the pain. Lol!! It's getting better with every session though, so the initial thoughts of dropping out are starting to fade.

I recently started getting speaking engagement gigs in relation to entrepreneurship. At first it was just because I enjoyed it, but guess what? I got paid for the last two!! Whoop whoop. Not like it was some millions or something, at least not yet, before you start saying Mofolusade has hit jackpot. Lol. Still, it feels good to be able to generate income in some other way. Multiple streams of income is the key to survival. We'll discuss this in a post for another day. Today should be about my favorite year in music, the 90s! #leggo

The song for today is a timeless one. I loved it so much, it always woke me up from sleep. I just had to wake up to enjoy the song. When I was younger, I used to sleep with the radio on, I liked the idea of music serenading me in the background. I tried it recently and I woke up with a headache!! hahaha. I couldn't believe it. Age has different ways of affecting you.

The song I am  referring to is Maxwell's cover version of "This woman's work" Oh lawd!! The song connected straight with my brain. The vocals, the flow, the lyrics. It was originally done by Kate Bush for the movie, She's having a baby. I don't even remember her version that much. Maxwell's voice is coated with honey.

In 1997, he covered the song for his MTV Unplugged album release. When it featured as a soundtrack for Love and Basketball, the song was reborn. There are some movies you don't forget in a hurry, Love and Basketball is one of such movies, with the remarkable songs on the soundtrack list, they bagged the best soundtrack award at the Black reel awards in 2001. The look on Maxwell's face in the video for the song sends shivers to my spine!

Enjoy!

This Woman's Work - Maxwell (Cover version)

Pray God you can cope
I'll stand outside (hen! what do u mean? will u enter the labor room my friend!! shio)
This woman's work
This woman's world
Oh it's hard on the man (Hard koo, hard ni!)
Now his part is over
Now starts the craft of the Father

I know you've got a little life in you yet
I know you've got a lot of strength left
I know you've got a little life in you yet
I know you've got a lot of strength left

I should be crying but I just can't let it show
I should be hoping but I can't stop thinking
All the things we should've said that I never said
All the things we should've done but we never did
All the things we should've given but I didn't

Oh, darling, make it go, make it go away

Give me these moments
Give them back to me
Give me your little kiss

Give me your...
I know you have a little life in you yet
Give me your hand, babe
I know you have a lot of strength left
Give me your pretty hand
I know you have a little life in you yet
Oh oh oh
I know you have a lot of strength left

My love child
I know you have a little life in you yet
Whatever you need me
I know you have a lot of strength left
Give me your hand
I know you have a little life in you yet
Give me your hand
I know you have a lot of strength left

I should be crying but I just can't let it show, baby
I should be hopin' but I can't stop thinkin'
Of all the things we should've said that we never said
All the things we should've done that we never did
All the things that you wanted from me
All the things that you needed from me
All the things I should've given but I didn't
oh, darling, make it go away, just make it go away

Why did you take out your Aftro though? I loved it.

 Sniff Sniff!!

*okbye* *Dodges bullets*

I was meant to post this yesterday, but the internet service was so slow last night, it had me close to tears. Plus I was trying to respond to all the facebook messages I got; I always feel, if someone takes out time to drop me a line, least I can do is respond. It wasn't easy at all though! But I think I read every single message and responded, especially for those that composed epistles! Thanks a lot people!

Let's pretend it's Friday then, can we? *winks* TGIF. I got the inspiration for my #90smusic song choice today from the movie "The internship". It was the song Vince Vaughn played in the car before they got the shocker that their company was closing down, Owen hated the song and wanted him to put it off, hehe!

I like the song though, to pieces (I like many 90s songs to pieces actually, especially the ones with guitars in the background). Alanis got a lot of criticism on her understanding of the word "ironic" because of this song! See yabs left right and center. Some people even got together to re-write the lyrics of the song to make it truly ironic;

They have a point though, because come to think about it, what is ironic about rain on your wedding day? Or good advice that you can't take? *scratches head*. However, I feel she got the concept of "Irony" with some of the examples. To help analyse this, I looked up the definition of "Irony" and found this;

*Culled from http://dictionary.reference.com/

i·ro·ny [ahy-ruh-nee, ahy-er-]

noun, plural i·ro·nies.

1.  the use of words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of its literal meaning: the irony of her reply, “How nice!” when I said I had to work all weekend.

2. Literature.

a. a technique of indicating, as through character or plot development, an intention or attitude opposite to that which is actually or ostensibly stated.

b. (especially in contemporary writing) a manner of organizing a work so as to give full expression to contradictory or complementary impulses, attitudes, etc., especially as a means of indicating detachment from a subject, theme, or emotion.

3. Socratic irony.

4. dramatic irony.

5. an outcome of events contrary to what was, or might have been, expected.

Going by the fifth point, I don't think she did too badly. Listen and let me know what you think. Which ones are actually ironic or not?

It must be tough to be in the limelight, the media can be brutal at times. It is even worse these days with social media! Everything you say or do will be dissected and analysed by everybody and anybody. E no concain me sha, I loved the song and still love it, even learned the lyrics back to back.

Enjoy..

Ironic - Alanis Morissette

Follow this link for the video if you can't view the one above

An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
And isn't it ironic... don't you think

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
"Well isn't this nice..."
And isn't it ironic... don't you think

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Well life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
When you think everything's okay and everything's going right
And life has a funny way of helping you out when
You think everything's gone wrong and everything blows up
In your face

A traffic jam when you're already late
A no-smoking sign on your cigarette break
It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife
It's meeting the man of my dreams
And then meeting his beautiful wife
And isn't it ironic...don't you think
A little too ironic...and, yeah, I really do think...

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought... it figures

Life has a funny way of sneaking up on you
Life has a funny, funny way of helping you out
Helping you out

I know........Dionne Farris #90smusic

Something amazing happened to me today. I can't wait to spill the beans, but you'll have to wait a bit. Avez du patience s'il vous plait - trying to give my rusty french a shot here, hehe.

I went to dig this one out from the archives for today's #90smusic post! If you know it, you really did rock the 90s! I am referring to Dionne Farris, I know. She left Arrested Development (this group rocked!) and launched out on her own with this hit single which went straight to the top of the billboards. No surprise there, because this was a time when you could swing a hit song without taking your clothes off or trying to twerk with your tongue hanging out on stage - Miley style. All you needed was a great mind for deep lyrics and great accompaniments. Good old days!

The simplicity of the lyrics of this song, the acoustic arrangement and her voice are just some of the things I love about the song. Plus its a song about liberating women in a way...... "I know what you're doing and it's not going to work this time". Sometimes, you're stuck in this cycle, you know the drill, you know the lyrics, yet it gets you over and over again - Break yourself free from all forms of manipulation! Just say, no more!

I wonder what she's up to these days. She just came and disappeared or maybe not! Turns out she put out some new material in 2011 and even 2013! Those ones definitely passed me by.

Enjoy!

I know what you're doing yeah yeah
I know why you dialed my number
I know what you're doing yeah yeah
I know why you care

I know what you're doing yeah yeah
I know why you say you love me
I know what you're doing yeah yeah
And I don't think it's fair

I know why you dialed my number
I know why you say you're mine
I know what you're doing,

And it's not, gonna work, this time (2)

I know what you're doing yeah yeah
I can never sing in that key
I know what you're doing yeah yeah
And you're the one to blame

I know what you're doing yeah yeah
I know why you can't forgive me
I know why you're singing lost love
The lyrics haven't changed

1-I can recognize the symptoms
You should know I've changed my mind
I know what you're doing
And it's not, gonna work this time
Hey hey hey, said it's not gonna work this time...

I know what you're doing, baby
I know why you call my name
I know why you say you love me
but I can't say the same
(repeat 1)

Gangsta's Paradise ........Coolio #90smusic

Let's get straight to the business of the day, #90smusic. I couldn't make up my mind what song to feature today, too many songs were jumping around my head screaming, me me! I had to calm my mind down and now we have a winner. It's Coolio's gangsta's paradise. Apart from Vanilla Ice's Ice baby lyrics  (because my brother wouldn't stop trying to do the rap, hahaha, he even recorded it on a cassette), this was one of the first rap songs I knew the lyrics to. No kidding, I knew the rap, back to back! I was so taken by the fact that it was clean, with no profanity, very unusual at the time.

This song was kind'a the highlight of the Dangerous minds movie for me. It's like most of these movies about "the hood" then had more memorable soundtracks than the movies themselves, look at Jayson's lyrics and Waiting to exhale for example. Many hits were born out of them. I was excited when Gangsta's paradise got to number one on Rick Dees' weekly top 40 show, my favorite countdown show ever! Say I, if you love Rick Dees too. The song even made it to the billboard hot 100 and spent a whooping twelve weeks there! Who said keeping it clean doesn't sell? Till date, I think this song has been Coolio's greatest hit ever.

I totally love the orchestra style chorus and background. You should see me now, rapping along, lol. I think my kids are wondering what has come over their mother.

What can I say, I am totally biased in favor of the 90s!!

Enjoy..

As I walk through the valley of the shadow of death
I take a look at my life and realize there's nothin' left
Cause I've been blasting and laughing so long,
That even my mama thinks that my mind is gone
But I ain't never crossed a man that didn't deserve it
Me be treated like a punk you know that's unheard of
You better watch how you're talking and where you're walking
Or you and your homies might be lined in chalk
I really hate to trip but I gotta loc
As they croak, I see myself in the pistol smoke, fool
I'm the kinda G the little homies wanna be like
On my knees in the night saying prayers in the streetlight

Been spending most their lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
Been spending most their lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
Keep spending most our lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
Keep spending most our lives, living in the gangsta's paradise

Look at the situation they got me facin'
I can't live a normal life, I was raised by the streets
So I gotta be down with the hood team
Too much television watching got me chasing dreams
I'm an educated fool with money on my mind
Got my 10 in my hand and a gleam in my eye
I'm a loc'd out gangsta set trippin' banger
And my homies is down so don't arouse my anger, fool
Death ain't nothing but a heartbeat away,
I'm living life, do or die, what can I say
I'm 23 now, but will I live to see 24
The way things are going I don't know

Tell me why are we so blind to see
That the ones we hurt are you and me

Been spending most their lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
Been spending most their lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
Keep spending most our lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
Keep spending most our lives, living in the gangsta's paradise

Power and the money, money and the power
Minute after minute, hour after hour
Everybody's running, but half of them ain't looking
What's going on in the kitchen, but I don't know what's cookin'
They say I gotta learn, but nobody's here to teach me
If they can't understand it, how can they reach me
I guess they can't, I guess they won't
I guess they front, that's why I know my life is out of luck, fool

Been spending most their lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
Been spending most their lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
Keep spending most our lives, living in the gangsta's paradise
Keep spending most our lives, living in the gangsta's paradise

Tell me why are we so blind to see
That the one's we hurt are you and me
Tell me why are we so blind to see
That the one's we hurt are you and me
[Fade out]
