Nigeria: Floating Forex Model and the Way Forward

If you are Nigerian and live in Nigeria, but think that everything happening in the economy does not concern you, think again. I am not asking you to become an economist or activist overnight, but if we must progress as a nation, all hands need to be on deck. We need to discuss the issues with a view to find solutions.

I remember when the floating forex policy was announced, Femi (you'll meet him in a minute) said to me, this is not the solution. I was looking at him like a pessimist at the time, until the dollar started to become scarce again! See yawa. What are we going to do ooo... people! Lol.

With all the brilliant people we have in this country, surely we can come up with solutions. By the time we challenge ourselves and drive discussions that help us think, I am hopeful that we will find a way out of the myriad of problems our Facebook commentators remind us of daily (as if we do not know already! shio).

Enough with the highlighting and amplifying of the issues. We need a plan and we need it fast! Femi has come on board to take us through from the root of the matter. He is not an economist neither am I, you know this already :-), but Femi is one of those efikos that like to read and follow trends in economics and politics. He's not here to force his opinion down our throats, but to start conversations that will lead somewhere.

I want to read your thoughts, whether you agree or disagree. Let's start this journey to solutions for Nigeria.

Cheers!

The Genesis......

Map of Nigeria

(This article has condensed reasoned economic structures without boring with percentages and theoretical jargons which often make the broth too thick for ease of consumption)

The CBN’s announcement of a floating foreign exchange model was wildly welcomed in many circles and heralded as the panacea to all our economic woes. The apex bank was hailed for such an obvious and ingenious approach to solving a critical problem. To be fair to the CBN in the light of the prevailing challenges, this policy stance made sense on first look.

However, a deeper look revealed that the floating exchange model was just a mild alternative for forced devaluation. Now while devaluation is not bad in and of itself, such monetary policy positions must be weighed against the realities and conditions required to benefit the economy in both the short term and the long term.

Devaluation is an economic monetary tool used to “officially lower the value of a country’s currency within a fixed exchange rate system relative to another currency, or group of currencies”. Significantly, this tool is used as a measure of achieving a favorable balance of trade by a country as it favors increased local production capacity for exports and self-sustenance and reduce dependence on imports through an attendant increase in cost of importation.

Nigerian floating exchange policy

At the time of the announced floating exchange model, the country was experiencing very challenging circumstances ditto

- Reduced revenue from crude earnings due to falling oil prices
- Failing and non-existent infrastructure
- Fleeing FDI and FPI  against a backlog of dollar transaction payments
- CBN’s curious monetary policies and summersaults
- Insecurities in various regions of the country
- Budget implementation merry-go-round/ stalemate
- Targeted speculative forex transactions
- Rising unemployment
- War against corruption (which was apparently fighting back)
- and a generally deteriorating standard of living across the country.

It becomes clearer therefore that inflation was only going up, unemployment will increase and recession becomes prescient. Furthermore, it becomes extremely disingenuous for an import based economy to pursue the path of asura (devaluation) in such testing circumstances to provide temporary reprieve to meet short term dollar mandates, in the hope of successful appeals for FDI and favorable loans. The long term repercussions are devastating.

First off, for devaluation to work we must have an export based structure or provide such environments and incentives as to encourage local production and use of local alternatives to meet local demands for self-sufficiency. In the absence of these foundations, the spectra of recession stretches towards the gloom of depression.

The much vaunted market forces which would determine the “real” value of the Naira are painfully skewed against any immediate or long term benefit to the people. Further, the anomaly called the BDC would only continue to strain the Naira as it is unfortunately worryingly dependent on speculative valuation. Thus, as the interbank rate seeks to find a balance (whilst dancing to the rhythm of the phantom market forces) and inches towards it, the parallel market will pull away (the clue is in the word “parallel”) further due to the vagaries of demand outstripping supply, remittance constraints and arbitrage. The utopian hope of market forces quickly turns into shades of dystopian nightmares in an import based, revenue starved and recession sunk economy.

Given that the only way out of a recession (and depression) is massive government spending, it mocks reason to assume that a limp currency would offer any succor. Thus our current reality is reduced purchasing power of the naira, increased cost of goods and a further impoverished standard of living. While the obvious is that your naira can acquire less, the dollar cannot purchase more since the market of source is still external. Therefore, the vicious cycle of continued devaluation, depreciation and recession creates a binding economic vortex with attendant sickening existential vertigo.

However, our current plight also offers some hope if properly managed. To do this we must

  • Abandon the fixation on floating or micromanaged forex and create policies and structures geared towards laying the foundation for self-sustenance and growth. In this belly of the beast which we find ourselves, government and regulatory authorities need to bite the bullet and address the issues head on.
  • Empower the alternatives and grow local capacity even at a deficit budgetary structure as increased cost of importation will ultimately lead to pursuit of alternatives.
  • Also, the mythical salvation by FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) needs to be addressed. With woeful ratings on ease of doing business, infrastructure availability and policy inconsistencies, this is not a surprise. However, these issues should be addressed immediately to create a welcoming environment and further garnished with appropriate incentives (tax breaks, access to funds etc.) to encourage investment. It should be noted that the above should apply to all businesses in the country and not the exclusive of some or patronizing FDIs.
  • The monetary policy oversight and regulatory body(s) should deploy a low interest scheme attached directly to infrastructure development and SME growth. While the previous arguments have been about increased liquidity leading to inflation, the structure should be to attach same facilities to managed support schemes.
  • Government stimulation, with fiscal policies, gross spending and appropriate monetary policies would ease us out of the current shadows.
Ultimately, if this is properly pursued, our dependence on foreign imports and single source revenue will reduce and we can begin to tap into, exploit and enjoy the wealth we have been blessed with in resources, people and intelligence.

What are your thoughts on this? We would love to hear from you.

RECAP: Excellence in life series 2.0

In spite of the current downward trajectory of the Nigerian economy, it is believed that an individual can be economically buoyant by discovering, nurturing and maximizing new opportunities.

This was the submission of speakers at the Excellence In Life Series (EIL) Series 2.0 held on Saturday, May 21, 2016, at the Standard Alliance Events Hall, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

With the theme, Breaking New Grounds, the speakers such as, Dr Femi Paul, who is also the Convener, Excellence In Life; Bukky George – Founder & CEO, HealthPlus Pharmacy; Ibukun Awosika, Chairman, First Bank offered valuable insights and ideas on how to spot, seize and maximize opportunities in the current economic downturn.

Bukky George - Founder/CEO, Health Plus
“Most people don’t listen until they are in the classroom. But the best lessons are taught along the way…in the ordinary course of daily life,” said Dr Femi Paul at the event.

He charged the audience to aspire to break new grounds. He said, “Ordinary people look and admire; winners look, observe and aspire.”

He further noted that “aspiration fuels Pertinent Enquiries and Propels People; admiration only generates simplistic applause and awe.”

Another speaker at the event, Bukky George, emphasized the need for an individual to explore his or her passion, noting that it is only when the individual did that he could get to the promised land. She also mentioned that it was important for people to seek to fill the gap that exists in their areas of specialization instead of just making up numbers.

“Your promised land is where your passion lies. It is where your heart quickens, where you feel an almost supernatural hunger to intervene and improve a situation,” said Bukky George.

“Seek out a gap in a product or service delivery that you have the qualification, skill, experience, inspiration and passion to fill. Fill the gap excellently.”

Unreasonable Lab launches in Nigeria, To Prepare Startups For Investment

Unreasonable Ambition: How a movement of entrepreneurship training programs seeks to put a dent on poverty

Boulder, CO –On 6th of June to 10th of June 2016, 25 startups from across Nigeria will gather in Lagos for 5 days, alongside top investors and business mentors for Unreasonable Lab Nigeria, a five-day intensive training program preparing them to raise capital, replete with seasoned entrepreneurs and investors from across Nigeria serving as mentors.

Asked why they wanted to bring Unreasonable Labs to their country, Unreasonable Labs Nigeria’s founding team Olufemi Omotayo, Tito Philips, Jnr. and Michael Olorunninwo said:

unreasonable lab nigeria

“For the first time in history, we have adopted a market economy. Our ongoing development cannot continue through aid and donation. There’s no other way to address our challenges but through entrepreneurship, innovation, and private sector. And Unreasonable Labs might be the best avenue to addressing these needs.”

“It’s amazing to see entrepreneurs creating companies that can really help a lot of people,” explains Teju Ravilochan, co-founder and CEO of Unreasonable Institute. Unreasonable Institute boasts successful alumni, including:
  • Mosaic, the “solar bank” that started as an idea at Unreasonable Institute and now is the largest lender for home solar projects in the United States.
  • Eneza, the fastest growing mobile education app in Africa, equipping 650,000 students in Kenya to gain access to tutoring and test prep on $10 phones.
  • MANA Nutrition, which has cured over one million kids of severe acute malnutrition through a nutrient-enriched peanut butter.
The results are striking. 93% of the 150 startups in Unreasonable Institute’s portfolio have raised funding totaling over $100 million. And all together, those companies are benefitting 8 million lives.

But to Ravilochan and his team, it wasn’t enough. “We started Unreasonable Institute because we thought the best way to address billion-person problems was by helping entrepreneurs find solutions,” he explains. “But to have any chance of doing that, we need to find thousands of entrepreneurs and get them the people and resources they need to grow.”

Ravilochan noted Unreasonable Institute had one key barrier to scale. “Our model is high touch,” he explains. “Mentors spend a lot of time with our entrepreneurs.” Mentors (experienced business and social/environmental change leaders) each pick one company to work with for 6-12 months. “And we carefully match them based on diagnosing our entrepreneur’s needs and understanding the mentor’s skills.”

“Entrepreneurs get a lot of attention from mentors who come through the program. That’s what makes Unreasonable Institute so valuable for them.” says Ravilochan. “So we weren’t going to be able to maintain the quality of our support and work with a whole lot more entrepreneurs. So we figured, hey, what if we could just teach other people to do what we do?”

Enter Unreasonable Labs. “We packaged up our curriculum and built a way to train teams we think could do what we do,” says Banks Benitez, Vice President of Global Expansion at Unreasonable Institute. “The local teams that we find in new countries to run Labs can then recruit locally-based mentors and funders to support the startups they find.”

In 2015-2016, Unreasonable Institute has equipped 25 Labs in the locations below:

Etyresnigeria - Olaseni Odukoya

Welcome to the year 2016!

You won't believe what a lazy start to the year I have had. I practically had to jumpstart myself to get into work mode. 2015 was an eventful year, as difficult as it was for many businesses, we survived and grew. For this I am grateful. We will soar in 2016 by God's grace.

When Olaseni briefed me about his business, I was excited because twice, I have had nasty experiences with buying tyres. Some mechanics even advice you to buy used tyres, that they are better!! How? This whole tyre headache can be such a nightmare. So it is great that these young men have come together to try to help us make life easier.

Read about the idea below...

Tell us about yourself

I had my Primary education at Green Springs Nursery & Primary School and also Little Saints Montessori Primary School, Ilupeju, Lagos.

My secondary education was at Christ Redeemer’s College, Sagamu, Ogun State after which I went to Redeemer’s University, now in Ede, Osun State for my tertiary education where I studied Economics, but like Forrest Gump's mother always told him "Life's a box of chocolates,You never know what you're gonna get".

Tell us about your business

etyresnigeria.com

As I grew older, I was thinking of how I can be useful to Nigerians as a whole and I met with people who had the same motive as me. We saw the inconvenience and unfulfilment when it comes to buying tyres from roadside dealers.

Moving from tyre store to tyre store, in search of one particular tyre brand and size is stressful and time-consuming. We understood the needs of the average Nigerian motorist and we wanted to make buying tyres exciting and fun; so myself & my fellow co-founders in  +Chiebuka Nworah  (Chiebuka Nworah) and (Godric Echefu), came up with the idea to have a platform where motorists can actually order for their tyres online and also order for tyres via a phone call, and so we decided to make this reality come true. With these in mind, etyresnigeria.com was born on the 1st of June, 2014.

Etyresnigeria.com was established with the objective of bringing choice, transparency and convenience to the tyre buying process. Starting with car tyres, we hope to expand to include all tyre accessories & products at best prices. Etyresnigeria.com allows customers to research, compare and review tyres from different tyre brands. Customers can select the best tyre option for their vehicle based on the product brand, size and price.

This changes the way tyres are sold in Nigeria – where a local dealer would try to sell the tyres he had in stock, and one had to visit ten dealers to find out the right price. Etyresnigeria.com delivers tyres all around Nigeria. We are in the process of rolling out a network of Etyresnigeria.com authorized fitment centres across Lagos, where customers who have purchased tyres online can have the tyres fitted.

What was your inspiration for starting this business?

As I grew older, I was thinking of how I can be useful to Nigerians as a whole and like I said I met with people who had the same motive as me. We saw the inconvenience and unfulfillment that comes with buying tyres from roadside dealers. With these in mind, Etyresnigeria.com was born.

Sometimes, customers are cheated to their wit's end and sometimes inferior & refurbished "Tokunbo" tyres are sold to them as new tyres and we needed to put an end to it. There was a problem to solve by providing a convenient, customer-friendly & transparent process when buying tyres. We came out to provide these values to Nigerian motorists.

How did you get funding for your business?

Everything so far has been self-funded between the 3 of us with personal savings, experience, family and friends support. Godric Echefu who is also a co-founder built the website with little finance and experience he acquired in school. Chiebuka Nworah and I contribute to the day to day running of the business with funds. We have not gotten bank loans.

What opportunities have you been able to leverage on in your business so far?

None at the moment. We are yet to receive any funding, grants or awards. I personally attended the +Daystar Christian Centre day star leadership academy which has contributed to my ability to run this business. We also have personal mentors.

What Challenges have you faced so far and how have you been able to overcome them?

The biggest challenge has been funding & access to finance. There are so many things we would want to introduce in the Nigerian Tyre Industry but due to lack of funds, we have not been able to. Also adverts to get awareness have not been easy.

Convincing Nigerian motorist not to purchase tokunbo tyres and part with good money for their safety is also a major problem. Also delivery is a challenge when there is scarcity and lack of vehicles due to little funds. We find solutions like outsourcing the delivery to cab guys and small delivery companies at times. At the beginning delivery was within Lagos only, so we had a challenge delivering outside of Lagos but now we have gotten a means to get tyres to our customers outside of Lagos.

How will you summarize the journey so far?

Its not been easy but with God nothing is impossible. We are not where we were when we first started. There has been improvement and more room for improvement. This journey was to put a smile on our faces especially fellow Nigerians and we are achieving that slowly but surely. With time things would be smooth. We can look at our account and say there is progress being made slowly knowing that we started with 0 naira.

Given the Chance, will you do this again?

Yes. This business is for the present and future of our beloved country Nigeria. Hopefully by the grace of God it becomes a legacy. We don't just sell tyres, we sell convenience, trust and safety.

What lessons have you been able to learn from your journey so far that others should know.

Never give up no matter what. Just believe in yourselves. We are all born entrepreneurs, its the extra zeal & creativity in you that gets you far and then you become a success. There are no jobs out there, doesn't mean you sit at home doing nothing, you have to challenge yourself to be great and do something with your creativity.

Why do you think Etyresnigeria.com will appeal to people?

Essentially, we understand what motorists go through when purchasing tyres. Sometimes, they are cheated to their wit's end and sometimes inferior & refurbished "Tokunbo" tyres are sold to them as new tyres. There was a problem to solve by providing a convenient, customer-friendly & transparent process when buying tyres. We are out to provide these values to Nigerian motorists.

Many of our innovations have come directly from customer feedback and I think people find that reassuring. The fact that we take on-board what they have said and we do something about it shows that we genuinely care about making their shopping experience that much simpler. We give people the opportunity to make savings on tyres and we also deliver a customer-focused service. We are always trying to adapt the way in which we do things so that the customer feels safe and secure when buying from us

Franchise Opportunity in Nigeria - Spring Meadow Edutainment and Meadow Hall Branchise

A few weeks ago, I got a call from an old friend Moninuade Illuyomade, She wanted me to come and talk to some aspiring entrepreneurs that were looking to take advantage of the Meadow hall franchise.

I was concerned about the distance and timing, but passion prevailed and I agreed. I was glad I was there because I didn't just get to share my 2 cents on entrepreneurship but I learnt about new opportunities available for investors in Nigeria.

I focused on my top five things you need to know before you jump into business, starting with your "why".

I have a vlog series ongoing on this, if you haven't visited my vlog please click here to watch and subscribe.... thanks!

Hehe... I was in my element!

If you have been to Meadow Hall in Lekki, or met the Group CEO, Mrs. Kehinde Nwani, you would immediately feel all the excellence packed into this vision. I was given a tour round the facility and oh my God!! If I wasn't living so far away and of course if I had that plenty school fees money (hehe...Good things don't come cheap, let's face it) I would move my boys there immediately.

Mrs. Kehinde Nwani, Group MD/CEO
I realized there is so much to gain from having healthy conversations with people, sometimes you catch a revelation that changes your whole life. This is what happened with Mr. Nwani, one minute she is discussing with a friend about expansion plans for meadow hall and her friend says, why don't you consider franchising? That was the aha moment and she dug up her legal notes and launched a full research on the possibilities.

With the current economic situation, running with an existing, tried and tested business model is the way to go! No kidding. No point spending money on trial and error. The franchise model is a win win, where the school gets to expand through you and you gain leverage. Don't get me wrong though, there will be challenges, but many of the basic hurdles will already be eliminated.

Mrs Moninuade Iluyomade, breaking down the franchise benefits
I promised to share summary of the opportunity to a lot of people, below is an overview of the Meadow Hall Branchise and what it offers;

Ignite Ideas Contest..... Apply now

Will 100,000 make a difference to your business? Is that the amount you need to jumpstart your business? If yes, this is for you. If no, hurry over to the previous post, but think deeply about this first. An over funded business can be as toxic as an under funded business.

Many times people raise the issue of funding, they complain and blame the banks, the family members that dont assist, the government and so on, then you ask them that critical question, how much do you need? Er.... there you go. So before you go shopping for funds, be clear on exactly how much you need and what you need it for.

The application for N100,000 interest-free loan for micro, small and medium scale enterprises as well as individuals with a viable business idea is still open.

Apply before the deadline and stand a chance to be one of the 1,100 great business ideas to access an interest free loan of N100,000 powered by Mrs Ibukun Awosika, +FirstBank Nigeria and the Lagos state government. You not only get to win this interest free loan but you also get access to capacity building programs from the Ignite Ideas team led by Mrs Ibukun Awosika.

The loan is not only interest free but comes with a 3 month moratorium after which payment is spread over a period.

MAX - Adetayo Bamiduro #inthespiritofenterprise

When someone leaves a juicy oil and gas job to go and "prepare" for entrepreneurship in MIT, you know this person ain't playing! Things are changing so fast in the entrepreneurship space in Nigeria. Young people are beginning to take risks and daring to follow their hearts. A few years ago, we had more people going to do MBAs in Ivy league schools just so they could get better jobs with fat salaries.

I met Tayo on one of my volunteer speaking engagements with the generation for societal change, run by some amazing young guys. He took time off work and flew in to Lagos just to be there. We were talking about fulfilling your potential to the final year students of mechanical engineering, Unilag. If you want to know someone who is headed somewhere, look at what they spend their time doing, what they commit to. I knew Tayo was going somewhere right from that time.

He shares his startup story with us in todays #inthespiritofenterprise

Enjoy.....

Tell us about yourself

My name is Adetayo Bamiduro. I acquired a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science in 2005 at the University of Ibadan. I began my entrepreneurial journey in my final year by building one of Nigeria's first mobile asset tracking and security platforms. 2 years later, I took a detour to explore the corporate world, so I worked for 3 multinationals in quick succession garnering experience in Manufacturing, Consulting and Energy. I then decided to return to my entrepreneurial calling so I chose to first prepare by pursuing a rigorous MBA program at MIT.

At MIT, I acquired skills and relationships that were relevant to my entrepreneurial vision for Africa.
Today, I see a window of opportunity to transform retail in Africa so I'm building a technology driven logistics service that will empower merchants, businesses and consumers to maximize online retail opportunities in Africa.

It is clear logistics is one of Africa's biggest challenges, and it happens to be one of the fields that has seen the least innovation. I'm determined to change this.

Tell us about your business

Business Name: MAX
Founded: 2015
About MAX:
MAX is a local Delivery Service designed for African cities.
MAX offer 3-HOUR, SAME-DAY and NEXT-DAY delivery services to its customers.
MAX leverages On-Demand Dispatch Technology and a high-performance network of Dispatch Riders to fulfill delivery requests at the click of a button.

MBA tins!! hahaha
MAX solves Africa’s most difficult last-mile fulfillment challenges by providing end-to-end pick-up and delivery, operating a point-to-point architecture, motivating Dispatch Riders with exciting career incentives and using state of the art mapping technology to manage navigation

What was your inspiration for starting this business?

There are over 9 million retailers in Nigeria, 99% of which are micro and small retailers. Many of them want to sell online, but they cannot deliver to consumers at the last-mile because they can’t afford a delivery fleet, and also because the major courier services are not interested in serving them.
The informal delivery industry in Nigeria is highly fragmented with hundreds of small players, most of which lack the technology and operations expertise that merchants and consumers need.
The large couriers operate asset heavy models that are expensive to scale. This explains why they cannot serve the huge community of micro and small retailers. This is the problem MAX solves, with its crowdsourced approach and a technology platform that enables it provide ultra-fast and secure local delivery.

How did you get funding for your business?

Family and Friends, Savings, Grants

What opportunities have you been able to leverage on in your business so far?

We've received awards, recognition and grants from the following organizations:

1. MIT Ideas Global Challenge
2. World Economic Forum
3. The MasterCard Foundation
4. The MIT Legatum Center
5. The MIT 100K Entrepreneurship Competition
6. Boston Campus Kudos Pitch Competition

What Challenges have you faced so far and how have you been able to overcome them?

Setting up and growing our customer base has been challenging but we are moving forward.
We've leveraged our extensive relationships in the local eCommerce ecosystem and this has been helpful.

It's also not been easy finding the right kind of talent for complex tasks.
We've done as much as we can by ourselves. We've also hired talented young people locally who are learning fast.

How will you summarize the journey so far?

It's been exciting.
Wouldn't exchange this experience for anything else.
You learn so much in a very short amount of time.
These are early days.
The future is exciting.

Given the Chance, will you do this again?

Absolutely!

What lessons have you been able to learn from your journey so far that others should know.

Conviction is critical.
Your team is critical.
Starting is more important than having a fancy business plan.
Talking to real customers is more important than downloading online reports.
Fund-raising is serious business.
